BECAUSE PRODUCTS ARE MORE THAN THE PHYSICAL ITEMS THEY REPRESENT.

PROJECT: CONVERTIBLE BACKPACK TOTE
This tote bag is part of a product collection called the "Dreamland" series, which includes 4 color iterations and matching fanny packs that blend 'kawaii' aesthetics with functionality optimized for cosplayers and convention vendors.
The oversized tote bag can be converted into a backpack or a crossbody with an additional strap and strategically placed D-rings.
Not only is the sewing pattern entirely custom-made by me, but there's also custom: metal zipper pulls, internal rubber logos, nylon liner fabric, nylon straps, color-matched dyed neoprene, and a rubber lash-tab.
This product included 3 sample iterations before the final sample was deemed ready for mass.

SKETCHES & MOCKUPS
Depending on the project, I utilize raster, vector & 3D software to create product sketches and mockup renders.
The overseas factories I work with primarily ask for Adobe Illustrator working files, which I'll optimize by working in-scale with Pantone color swatches (TCX, C, etc) according to the intended material and vendor request.
This project went through multiple changes throughout the sampling process from its initial sketch, seen here.

SAMPLING
Sample alterations involved changes in the sewing pattern and fabric materials.
The initial mockup had a body of corduroy and nylon, which I changed to striped pinky and neoprene for ease of washing and for a more lush, sturdy structure. The new mix of materials was more luxe without increasing the cost beyond a one-time flat fee for the neoprene dye-bath (per mass production order).

FACTORY FEEDBACK
I provide specific, visual feedback to the overseas factories I work with so that language barriers cause less back-and-forth and to avoid costly mistakes. Plus, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

Surface Patterns
Repeat patterns optimized for print production on paper, textiles, ceramics and other materials.
My personal inspiration comes from mid-century modern color blocking, pop-up storybooks & illustrations by artists like Mary Blair.

Toys & Figures
While I'm a big fan of toy companies like POPMart, I have a more personal connection with toy creation; my husband, whose brand is Flux Tide Designs, handcrafts resin figurines. Not only am I familiar with the full process of figure creation - from ideation to modeling to 3D printing to molding and finishing - but I've been involved in several of his projects, including conceptualization, 3D modeling & more.
